A day with the Rangers

Medium Walk (5 - 8 miles)
Rangers
Date: Tuesday, 19 February 2019 10:00 AM

So we have got a very different winter day out for you.  A cap of 20 on numbers so book your place soon!  Lots to do but not a lot of walking so you might like to think who would enjoy this day but perhaps not cope with a longer day of walking as we normally do?

You will, I am sure, have heard the challenges overcome when building the Manchester to Liverpool railway over Risley Moss.

Risley Moss Local Nature reserve is the remaining small area of that moss that has not been drained & built on.   The area is now being managed as a nature reserve for nature and environmental issues – it absorbs carbon.  The railway is next to the nature reserve.

The warden will take us into the restricted area of the moss so we can see at close quarters what it is like and what is being done with it.  So we will have a mixture of nature, wildlife, environmental science and transport + WWll history with a warden to explain everything.

A big area locally was a filling factory for the ROF in WW11.  A sister factory to the one close by me in Chorley.  Some of the ROF magazines can still be found there so we will see that history of the war along with displays.

You can see more at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/homepage/542/risley_moss

There is a visitor Centre there so we will have use of a classroom – more or less depending on the weather on the day.     So she could talk to us in the dry as appropriate & also somewhere dry to sit for lunch.  We can make a brew(s) as we wish.

No fixed charges but I would suggest a minimum contribution of £5pp to contribute to the Rangers time and to the development of the nature reserve.  10 am to 3pm ish.
