Pickerings Pasture in Halebank Widnes
The walk takes in six bridges, one river and two canals, and whilst not rural will appeal to those with an interest in civil engineering, waterways, a nature reserve and the industrial history of the North West of England.
Start Point; Pickering's Pasture, Mersey View Road, Halebank. WA8 8LP.
Ample Free Parking on site. Plenty of brown direction signs in the area.
Start time; 10.00am prompt.
How to get there
Unless you want to incur a £2 each way toll on the new bridge, I think the most direct route is M62 towards Liverpool, exiting at Junction 6 - Tarbock Island, onto the A5300 Knowsley Expressway, following the signs towards Widnes Town Centre, where you will pick up the brown 'place of interest' signs for Pickering's Pasture.
Route Distance; Between 9 and 10 miles of largely level walking on gravel and tarmac paths.
A hike with a difference
December's walk takes in six bridges, one river and two canals, and whilst not rural will appeal to those with an interest in civil engineering, waterways and the industrial history of the North West of England. Dipping in and out of the 'Trans Pennine Trail' we travel from Pickering's Pasture in Halebank, along the banks of the River Mersey to Spike Island, and over the (now closed so we will get the free shuttle bus) Silver Jubilee Runcorn Bridge before joining the Bridgewater Canal in Runcorn Old Town.
From there we make our way down to the Manchester Ship Canal, crossing over the swing bridge onto Wigg Island, now a nature reserve on land reclaimed from its former industrial use in alkali extraction and mustard gas production for the WW II war effort. With its woodland paths and bird viewing hides, Wigg Island provides an excellent view of the new, recently opened Mersey Gateway.
We return via the Runcorn promenade alongside the ship canal, before retracing our steps over the bridge and back to Pickering's Pasture for a seasonal mince pie and a shot of mulled wine or sherry.
